You know what’s a drag? Having a giant brick warehouse with buses coming in and out of it all day take up an entire block on one side of a neighborhood commercial street. That’s the reality of 14th Street NW between Buchanan and Decatur. It’s frustrated upper 14th Street businesses no end, and even Metro wants to get rid of it, given that it could use some major renovations.

Digital Migrations Artists and photographers who are reinterpreting Modern and Post- Modern Art. Any technique goes! Digitally that is! Show Dates for the exhibit will be November 9th, 2011 until Jan. 11, 2012. We have all loved Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Modernism of the 19th and 20th century. Now, digital technology has forced artists to begin to blend their imagery with new media.

“Colors of Life” showcases the photographic works of The Exposure Group African American Photographers Association members. They include portrait artists, photojournalists, documentary, and fine art photographers. Colors of Life has been shown in numerous venues to great acclaim. This exhibition coincides with the second anniversary of the publication of The Exposure Group’s highly popular photography catalogue, also entitled Colors of Life. The catalogue will be available for purchase during the exhibition.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is gorgeous, intuitive, and more necessary than you think. Just like a certain blockbuster MP3 player was once upon a time.

Tony Fadell invented the iPod. Okay, he didn’t do it singlehandedly–but the former Apple executive conceived it, got Apple on board, and then went on to shepherd the development of 18 (!) generations of the company’s signature pre-iPhone product. In 2008 he left Apple and several years later founded a stealth startup called Nest Labs, which was revealed this year to be in the… thermostat business. Wait, what?

Steve Jobs, remembered fondly today for the many ways in which he changed the world, was more an innovator than an inventor. He did not create the first-ever personal computer, or the first digital music player, or the cellphone — but he took each and honed it, made it accessible, useful, reliable and very, very cool.

For much of the 20th century, private developers ignored Harlem, deterred by its high crime rate, profusion of subsidized housing, and long trek from Midtown. During the malaise of the 1970s, the city owned well over half of the real estate in this storied neighborhood, long regarded as the nation’s black cultural capital.
